A line-up of tutors and open programme of the 2nd session of Ex Oriente Film is up!

    We have now started a countdown to the second session of Ex Oriente Film 2013 and we are more than pleased to present you this year´s tutors' names and open workshop programme.

    We have now started a countdown to the second session of Ex Oriente Film 2013 and we are more than pleased to present you this year´s tutors and open workshop programme.
    We especially look forward to welcoming an acclaimed Israeli filmmaker and essayist, Eyal Sivan, who will present a master class dedicated to using film as a tool for activism, change of perception about history and political use of memory. His master class will be preceded by the screening of his film THE SPECIALIST, PORTRAIT OF A MODERN CRIMINAL (France, 1999, 128 min) - a unique courtroom drama recorded during the trial of Adolf Eichmann, in 1961, in Jerusalem. During this session a special attention will be paid to the visual style in documentary filmmaking. The workshop will introduce a master class of a world-famous cinematographer and director Kirsten Johnson, preceded by her film VIRGIN TALES. Both master classes will be organized in cooperation with Jihlava IDFF.

    As usual the workshop programme will include individual meetings among our participants and tutors, group sessions and special lectures dedicated to legal aspects of international coproduction, cross media and alternative ways of film financing and distribution. The first part of the workshop will offer an inspirational case study on How to run a production company focused on documentary film by Danish producer Helle Faber. We are happy to announce that this year´s lecture about financing and budgeting in documentary films will be held by German producer Stefan Kloos. An insight in the world of distribution will be offered by Anaïs Clanet, a Manager at Wide House. Nick Ware, Managing Director of MercuryMedia, will address question about Digital Documentary in the Age of the Internet. In addition to that, we will be having editing sessions which will be hosted by renowned professionals such as Martin Mareček, Míra Janek and Peter Kerekes. The tutors will be chaired by Marijke Rawie, Mikael Opstrup a Filip Remunda.     Peter Kerekeš: Staging, Re-enactments and Composition in Documentary Film
    Master Class by Slovak director Peter Kerekeš, who makes the past come alive through the playful reconstruction of the personal history of his characters and with the help of various objects, souvenirs and music in his films. In a mixture of materials and time levels, Kerekes’ films reveal the relationship between yesterday, today and tomorrow. A personal guided tour through the documentary filmmaking that combines contemporary film material, real and at the same time stylized archives, illustrations and re-enactments. Followed by Q&A session.

    MASTER CLASS & SCREENING: Kirsten Johnson
    Kirsten Johnson, a renowned and award-winning US cinematographer and director, presents a master class dedicated to her approach to the visual style in documentary film.  Besides other examples of her cinematographic work, Kirsten Johnson will talk about and show clips from her current documentary project A Blind Eye. How may the theme, enviroment and characters of the film affect its visual style in order to strengthen the storytelling aspect?  The master class will be preceded by the screening of Virgin Tales (87´, dir. Mirjam Von Arx, Switzerland, 2012) – one of the most recent Johnson´s works as a cinematographer. Following seven Evangelical children as they prepare for their fairytale vision of romance and marriage, the film shows a subculture that doesn’t believe in even kissing before marriage.

    Israeli-born, French-based filmmaker Eyal Sivan holds a master class dedicated to documentary filmmaking as a means of expressing critical dialogue, political consciousness and history (re)vision in the frame of the Israeli-Palestinian relations . The master class will be preceded by the screening of The Specialist, portrait of a modern criminal (France, 1999, 128 min) - a unique courtroom drama recorded during the trial of Adolf Eichmann, in 1961, in Jerusalem. The film about obedience and responsibility is the portrait of an expert in problems resolving, a modern criminal. The film is inspired by the controversial book by Hannah Arendt: Eichmann in Jerusalem, report on the banality of evil.
