TIFF - „The usual suspects” are back

Another new section, The Usual Suspects, marks the return to Cluj of the filmmakers whose first and second films have been a part of the official competition of the previous editions.

Eight of the former competitors for the Transilvania Trophy return to Cluj in a special section, titled The Usual Suspects. As the official competition is focused exclusively on first and second features, TIFF intends to follow up on the filmmakers whom the festival discovered throughout the years. "The Usual Suspects section represents out way of celebrating new works by former TIFF alumni, filmmakers who already belong to the «big Transylvanian family». It's just a matter of divine intervention that the new film by Daniel Sánchez Arévalo, winner of the TIFF Audience Award with both Azul oscuro casi negro and Gordos, is titled La gran familia espanola", says Mihai Chirilov.

Thus, this year's edition marks the return to Cluj of former winners Rune Denstad Langlo (The 2009 Transilvania Trophy with Nord), with his new film Chasing the Wind, Sergei Loban (The Special Jury Prize for Chapiteau Show, 2012) with his previous film, the debut feature Dust, the Chilean director Sebastián Silva (Best Cast La nana, 2009), with his new psychological thriller Magic Magic, with Juno Temple and Michael Cera, a film which premiered last year in Quinzaine des Réalisateurs.

The oldest TIFF competitors are Stefan Hillebrand and Oliver Paulus. For her role in their film, When the Right One Comes Along, Isolde Fischer received a Special "Best Actress" Mention in 2004. In 2014, the directorial duo comes to Cluj with a comedy about three young men in wheelchairs who decide to become gangsters – Keep Rollin’.

The Mexican director Fernando Eimbcke will present Club Sandwich, a tender story about a mother-son relationship, six years after competing at TIFF with Lake Tahoe, Kurd director Huseyin Karabey proposes a Kafka-like story, Come to My Voice, five years after his first film, My Marlon and Brando, screened in Cluj, and Guy Nattiv returns to the festival three years after Mabul - with Magic Men, a road movie about a Holocaust survivor and his son.
