VARNA: Ivan Cherkelov’s new feature Family Relics will have its world premiere in the main competition of the 33rd Golden Rose NFF (6-11 October 2015). The date of the domestic release has not been confirmed yet.
The film combines three different stories: the first one revolves around a middle-aged couple taking a ride in a forest; the second is about a young girl breaking up with her boyfriend; in the third one two brothers try to visit their alcoholic father in a clinic.
Scriptwriter/director Cherkelov revealed to the Bulgarian press that the film “explores bizarre types of family life” and that “the main six characters are of equal importance.”
Only two members of the cast, Jana Karaivanova and Andrey Andreev, both living and working in the US, are professional actors. The cast includes Gloria Petkova, Alexander Belev, Blaje Dimitrov and Venzislav Zankov.
Shooting took place mainly in the forests of the Rhodope Mountain in the summer of 2014. „It was continuously raining and the location became almost a nightmare”, producer Galina Toneva told FNE. Known for his passion for India, Cherkelov also shot for a week in the town of Vrindavan.
Galina Toneva and Kiril Kirilov produced through Gala Film in coproduction with Bulgaria’s Andarta Studio. The budget was 800,000 EUR of which nearly 640,000 EUR was provided by the Bulgarian National Film Center. The MEDIA Programme also supported the film. The Bulgarian National Television acquired broadcasting rights.
