ZAGREB: The Ministry of Love , a dramatic comedy from Bucharest-based Croatian filmmaker Pavo Marinković (Love Life of a Gentle Coward, Tressette–a Story of an Island) is in development with plans to begin filming in May 2015.
The Croatian-Czech-Romanian coproduction written by Marinković is, as he told FNE, a film with "modern absurd and classic Gogolian motifs" inspired by the Croatian Family Law. "If the law abolishes distinctions between marital and non-marital union, what will happen to the pension of Croatian soldiers’ widows if they now live in non-marital unions with new partners?" the director wondered after reading an article about the changes in the Family Law.
Ministarstvo ljubavi/The Ministry of Love is produced by Stanislav Babić through Telefilm, in coproduction with Julietta Sichel through the Czech company 8 Heads Productions and Tudor Giurgiu through the Romanian company Libra Film. Negotiations with a French production company are underway.
The budget is around 1 m EUR, Marinković told FNE. The project received a project development grant of 14,300 EUR/110,000 HRK from the Croatian Audiovisual Centre. It received a script development grant of 4,582 EUR/35,000 HRKfrom HAVC in April 2013. The script has been selected at the 8th edition of Scripteast, 2013/2014 and participated in the Baltic Event in December 2013.
The main character will be played by the Czech actor Jan Budar, former Berlinale Shooting Star. The director told FNE that he plans to work with the Romanian DoP Andrei Butică (Child's Pose). Shooting will take place in Zagreb and Southern Croatia.
