TALLINN: Director Viestur Kairish takes on the topic of the deportation of 40,000 Baltic citizens to Siberia in 1941 in the drama Chronicles of Melanie, planned for completion in 2015.

The film, with a budget of just under 1m EUR, is a Latvian/Finnish coproduction with some 70 percent of the budget in place. It received financing from the National Film Center of Latvia and the Finnish Film Foundation. The film is produced by Inese Boka-Grube from Film Studio Mistrus Media of Latvia and Finland’s Inland Film Company.

The title character in the film, which is based on a true story, is a journalist and mother of a young boy who writes daily, undeliverable letters to her husband whose location is unknown.

The filmmakers were at the recent Baltic Event to pitch the film to potential coproducers, post-production partners, sales agents and distributors.
