Canal Plus Takes Stake in TVN

By FNE Staff

WARSAW: France's Canal Plus will acquire what is described as a "significant minority stake" in leading commercial Polish broadcaster TVN. TVN stock fell more than 10%, to 12.73 zloty on 31 October, and fell another 6% to 12 zloty when the market reopened on 2 November, after a 1 November public holiday in Poland.

Analysts quoted in Business Week said the decline was due to disappointment over a lack of a public tender and the lack of a strategic investor. The two broadcasters will likely merge their companies to create a satellite pay-TV broadcaster to compete with leading Polish satellite TV company Cyfrowy Polsat.

Details of the deal were not made public.
