FNE at MIFF 2013: Poland’s Traffic Department and Georgia’s Disorder in Competition

    MOSCOW: The 35th Moscow International Film Festival kicks off this Thursday 20 June and runs until 29 June with a competition lineup that includes Polish director Wojciech Smarzowski’s Traffic Department and Georgian director Archil Kavtaradze’s Disorder. A total of 16 films from 13 countries will compete for the festival’s main prize the St George.

    The massive programme which includes 25 programmes sections also includes competitive documentary and short film sections as well as a chance to see the latest new Russian films in the Russian programme.

    The festival will close with newly minted Russian citizen Gerard Depardieu playing mad monk Rasputin in a new film titled Rasputin directed by Irakli Kvirikadze that also features Fanny Ardant, Valdimir Mashkov, Kseniya Rapport and Anna Mikhalkova.

    The passing of two giants of Central and Eastern European cinema over the past year brings tributes of two different kinds of In Memoriam programmes. Alexei Balabanov will screen films from the work of the iconic Russian director of the past two deciade.

    A programme titles Prague Summer: Galina Kopaneva will screen classics of the Czech New Wave as a tribute to the Czech film scholar and film critic Galina Kopaneva. The programme will give a new generation a chance to see the early films of Jiri Menzel, Karel Kachyna, Vera Chytilová, Milos Forman and others.
