22 projects selected for the Trieste co-production forum from a new record number of 301 submissions

    Trieste - December 17, 2015 – 22 film projects from 19 countries will be presented at the sixth edition of When East Meets West,the Italian co-production forum taking place on January 24-26, 2016 in the context of the Trieste Film Festival.

    WEMW200This year WEMW will bring together film projects and more than 300 industry professionals, particularly from Eastern Europe, Italy and the 2016 spotlight region: Spain, Portugal and Latin America. 

    The 22 projects in development - 10 documentaries and 12 fiction features - were selected out of the record number of 301 submissions (33 from Italy, 25 from Spain, 8 from Portugal, 94 from Latin America and 141 from Eastern Europe). The final selection will include several debut features but also upcoming films by Janis Nords (selected at Berlinale International Film Festival 2013 with “Mother, I Love You”), Kristina  Grozeva (awarded in 2014 at San Sebastián International Film Festival with “The Lesson”), and Daniel Ribeiro (Brazilian entry for the Oscars 2015’s Foreign Language Film category with his first feature film “The Way He Looks”). “Once again our final line-up includes an interesting blend of award winning directors and emerging talents, confirming the dual goal of WEMW: supporting established filmmakers in their ambitious follow-ups and scouting new strong voices” remarks Alessandro Gropplero, head of WEMW.

    All selected producers will compete for the WEMW Development Award, the EAVE scholarship and the brand new Flow Postproduction Award, a prize consisting in 10.000 EUR in post-production facilities. All feature-length projects budgeted at over €1M will also be eligible for the TRL Espresso Award, an automatic selection at Rome’s New Cinema Network and at Film London PFM in October 2016.

    In addition to the 22 projects selected for the pitching forum, WEMW invited 3 additional Latin American guest projects (1 documentary and 2 fiction features) previously presented in three partners markets of this upcoming edition of the Trieste co-production forum: DocMontevideo, BAM – Bogotà Audiovisual Market and IFP – New York Independent Filmmaker Project.

    Along with the showcase of projects in development, When East Meets West 2016 will include several other initiatives: the work in progress section for documentaries Last Stop Trieste, the workshop for long feature fiction films in early editing phase First Cut Lab, the think-tank platform #FEEDback, the showcase of completed films previously presented in the forum Born in Trieste and a rich programme dedicated to the co-production opportunities with the 2016 spotlight region.

    WEMW is organized by the Friuli Venezia Giulia Audiovisual Fund together with the Trieste Film Festival, in collaboration with EAVE, Antenna MEDIA Torino, Maia workshops, Eurimages and with the support of Creative Europe - MEDIA Programme, Direzione Generale per il Cinema – MiBACT, CEI (Central European Initiative) and the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
