FESTIVALS: New Europe Film Put Spotlight on CEE

    EDINBURGH: Romanian director Andrei Ujica's The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu opened the 5th New Europe Film Festival (www.neweuropefilm.com), which runs through 12 April at the Filmhouse in Edinburgh. This year's films come from Poland, Slovakia, Czech Rep, Bulgaria, Hungary, Romania and Slovenia, with a focus on contemporary stories set in the CEE region.

    Issues of living in a big city, immigration and dealing with adulthood as well as the shameful past are the most common topics in the selected films.

    Highlights include award-winning Erratum by Marek Lechki (Poland), Eastern Plays by Kamen Kalev (Bulgaria) and Petr Zelenka's CEE coproduction Karamazovs.

    "Every year it is important for us to show contemporary films and illustrate the state of a region and its diversity. I think that the issues addressed by filmmakers from Eastern and Central Europe are very relevant to the UK audience," - said Jan Naszewski, the festival director.
