In The Japanese Dog/Câinele japonez an old man, widowed by recent floods, and his son who has been living in Japan, see each other again for the first time in 20 years. Their expectations run high, and come close to matching the reality. The brief re-encounter brings hope that the present which the old man receives before parting, a Japanese Robodog, will change both their lives for the better.
Bogdan Crăciun is the executive producer. Oana Giurgiu is coproducing with Hai-Hui Entertainment (www.hai-hui.ro). From a budget of 575,000 Euros, 450,000 Euros is already in place, Giurgiu told FNE. The project has a MEDIA (ec.europa.eu/culture/media) Development Support grant (part of the Slate Funding grant received by Libra). It is also supported by HBO Romania (www.hbo.ro).
Shooting is due to start early June and to last for four months. The main actors are Victor Rebengiuc (Medal of Honor/Medalia de onoare), Şerban Pavlu (Everybody in Our Family/Toată lumea din familia noastră) and Kana Hashimoto. The international premiere is set for the Berlinale (www.berlinale.de) 2013, with the local release in spring 2013.
Tudor Cristian Jurgiu graduated Drama and Film University of Bucharest (www.unatc.ro) in 2011. His short Oli's Wedding/Nunta lui Oli (2009) won Best Fiction Short at Leeds International Film Festival (www.leedsfilm.com), Best Short Film - Anonimul International Film Festival (www.anonimul.ro) Romania, and Best Romanian film - Next Festival (www.nextfilmfestival.ro).
