Mungiu won the Palm d'Or with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days in 2007.
In Beyond the Hills Mungiu tackles the friendship between two young women in an Orthodox convent in contemporary Romania. His script is based on the non-fiction novels of Tatiana Niculescu Bran, a Romanian journalist who documented the case of a young novice who died in 2005 after being subjected to an exorcism ritual in the Moldavian monastery of Tanacu.
Mungiu is producing the film through his company Mobra Films (www.mobrafilms.ro), in co-production with Why Not Production (www.whynotproductions.fr), Wild Bunch (www.wildbunch.biz), Les Films du Fleuve (www.lesfilmsdufleuve.be), France 3 Cinéma (www.france3.fr) and Mandragora Movies. The project is supported with 273,100 Euro by the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro). Eurimages (www.coe.int/t/dg4/eurimages) contributed 400,000 Euro.
The main actors are little known with the exception of Valeriu Andriuţă who played a significant part in Mungiu's first feature, Occident. Cristina Flutur and Cosmina Stratan play the main characters, Voichiţa and Alina. Oleg Mutu (432, Moy Joy) is the DOP. The movie was developed under the working title Provisory/Provizoriu. Shooting took place under the radar between November 2011-February 2012. Beyond the Hills/După dealuri has already been picked up by Sundance Selects (www.sundanceselects.com) to be distributed in North America.
