BUCHAREST: Written by Corneliu Porumboiu and Igor Cobileanski, La limita de jos a cerului/The Unsaved captures the lack of prospects in contemporary Republic of Moldova through the bitter sweet drama of two young friends trying to take control over their lives. Cobileanski’s first feature will have its world premiere in the East of the West competition of the 48th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival ( www.kviff.com ).

Viorel is a small drug dealer in a Moldavian small town. His mother is bugging him about taking a job, the woman he loves is about to start searching a new life together with her lover, and his best friend tries to convince him to help fixing a broken hang-glider.

“What drew me to this project was a very good script, especially the fact that it depicts a world that has no clear direction and lacks unity and purpose. The perfect place that portrays the environment in the script was present-day Moldova, where we did the shooting,” producer Alex Teodorescu told FNE.

“The Unsaved was written initially by Corneliu Porumboiu and that was something everybody knew. I was a little bit scared that the audience will compare it with Corneliu’s films,” Cobileanski told FNE. He also said that while in Karlovy Vary he is hoping to meet producers for his second feature, now in development.

Shot in Republic of Moldova in Autumn 2010, The Unsaved wass produced by Alex Teodorescu through the Romanian company Saga Film (sagafilm.ro). The budget was slightly over 1 m EUR, Teodorescu told FNE, and it was partially covered by a MEDIA  ( http://ec.europa.eu/culture/media/index_en.htm) development grant as well as a production grant of 300,000 EUR from the National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro). Chainsaw Europe (www.chainsaweurope.com) from Bucharest hosted the editing process, Raza Studio (www.razastudio.ro) the sound editing, and Budapest’s Focus Fox Studio (www.focusfox.hu) the Dolby mixing.

Oleg Mutu, famous for Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days/4 luni, 3 săptămâni şi 2 zile and Sergei Loznitsa’s In the Fog/V tumane is the DoP. The main characters are played by Moldavian actors Igor Babiac, SergiuVoloc and Ela Ionescu. The Romanian premiere is expected in autumn 2013.

Born in Republic of Moldova, Igor Cobileanski is currently working in Chişinău and Bucharest. After a few shorts which were best known online, he made a feature for television called Tache (2009).
