The central character in The Birthday Party/Aniversarea is Radu Maligan who will celebrate his 94th birthday soon although its three-generation family expects each year will be the last one, all the more since he is semi-paralized and in a wheelchair. The core of the plot is the fact that Maligan refuses to confess thus leading his family to an understanding of who he really was.

Negotiations with the prominent Romanian actors Radu Beligan, Victor Rebengiuc, Ion Besoiu and Dorel Vişan are underway. Confirmed cast members are the younger actors Lucian Ifrim, Gigi Ifrim, Emanuel Pârvu and Ioana Flora. Liviu Pojoni, Jr. is the DoP.

Chişu is producing through DaKino Productions in coproduction with Watch Me Production. The Romanian National Film Center is supporting the film with a production grant of 145,573 EUR/642,000 RON announced in October 2014. The 690,000 EUR budget has approximately 70% already in place, Chişu told FNE. "If I cannot find the 30% that remains, it's not a problem because I will come in with my own money, just as I did for my other films," he said. He has not decided yet if the maximum 30 shooting days will be on location or in a studio
