Romania Appoints Csilla Hegedus as Minister of Culture

    BUCHAREST: Csilla Hegedus has been named as the new minister of Culture and vice-prime-minister with Romanian president Traian Băsescu signing the appointment decree on 18 November 2014.

    The Romanian Ministry of Culture was subject to numerous changes in the last year due to political turmoil. In December 2013 Gigel Ştirbu took over the leadership after the resignation of Daniel Barbu, but left two months later during a government crisis. When the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (DAHR/UDMR) entered the government, it received the portfolio of the Minister of Culture and Kelemen Hunor was appointed Minister of Culture in March 2014. He announced his resignation in summer 2014 with the prime-minister Victor Ponta taking his place as acting minister of Culture until DAHR/UDMRcould come with a new nomination.

    Specialized in heritage management, Csilla Hegedus was personal councilor to the minister of Culture from 2010 to 2012 and executive director of Transilvania Trust from 1997 to 2014.She is expected to be sworn into office on 19 November 2014.
