FESTIVALS: FNE at Istanbul IFF: 72nd Ward

    Made on a budget of 1 million Turkish lira, 72nd Ward which opened in Turkish cinemas on 4 March 2011 has already earned 2 million Turkish lira at the box office. The second film adaptation of the story, the film benefited by advance word-of-mouth.

    {mosimage}The shooting of it started in November 2010 and post-production lasted three months. The story is adapted from an acclaimed book by Orhan Kemal. The prison movie is set during WWII, with depictions of the lives and pains of the inhabitants of the 72nd Ward.

    The young director Murat Saracoglu is known for his uplifting, popular movies including O... Cocuklari, 120 and Deli Deli Olma. The cast includes Hulya Avsar, the veteran actress who was a star of Turkish cinema between 1980 and 2000; Yavuz Bingol who started his career as a musician; and Kerem Alisik who is the son of veteran actor Sadri Alisik.

    The film is produced by a new company, Sasin Film Company (founded by Alisik and Bingol). It is distributed by Medyavizyon (www.medyavizyon.com.tr) which has the leading market share for Turkish films.
