    About the movie

“A sarcastic and tender movie at the same time. The individuals lie to one another and run after each other without ever finding what they are looking for. Jean Renoir depicts a world of puppets where the characters are imprisoned in their mental and social condition.”
Jacques Doillon, Liberation, October 21st 1975.

When love, friendship, and fate connect a simple Polish country boy, the daughter of a local farmer, a young German soldier, and a Jewish girl from Warsaw.

1943. The Polish countryside. After the great defeat of Stalingrad, Germany begins sending younger and younger recruits to war. That is how GUIDO, a sensitive seventeen-year-old, finds himself fighting in Poland. While serving near a small village, he tries to escape the brutality of the war and the simplistic point of view of his much older fellow soldiers. He has a secret hideaway in the attic of the post where he listens to forbidden jazz records and dreams of better times. At the same time, ROMEK (17), tries to help his single mother by working as an assistant rail engine operator. He dreams of two things: to captain his own train like his father before he went missing, and to win the heart of FRANKA, the daughter of well-to-do farmer.

The ill-fated and unlikely connection of these four, in the context of a horrific war, leads to a series of tragedies. Who will survive is not entirely up to them.

Volker Schlöndorff comes back with a drama film dealing with the « Hostage Question” paying a moving tribute to the French citizens who were shot dead during the Occupation. The film questions Death as it comes as a form of an administrative act when human beings are at stake, like puppets dangling on the strings of an inexorable machine. While the hostages refuse to wear a blindfold and that the rifleman are looking them right in the eyes, we can’t help getting deeply caught by the dreadful reality of wartime.
