Panels of top documentary festivals’ and sales’ representatives at DOK.Incubator

    Last week of August, the workshop of DOK.Incubator takes place in Banská Štiavnica. Filmmakers from Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary are invited.

    Not only piracy, but now also Amazon, and especially Netflix are arriving to the central and Eastern Europe and change the distribution chain completely.The audience is having increasingly wider choice, independent from the cinemas, festivals, and TV channels.Social media are changing the way people learn about the films and for the distributors and producers it‘s not any more useful to target the PR demographically but need to understand, what "clans" are connected to thetopics of the films and how to invite them to cinemas.

    Nowadays, to be able to get people come to see your film, it‘s esential to work on the audience building long term, and think strategicaly. It‘s becoming a very complex know-how, which takes years of experience. Therefore, DOK.Incubator opens its second workshop, focused on distribution, to the local filmmakers to open up a discussion on the new film market situation and its possibilities.

    On Tuesday, 25th August, Slovak, Czech, Hungarian and Polish filmmakers can attend panel discussions on the producers’ opportunities how to build interest for the film and how and when approach strategically various partners: sales agents, broadcasters and festivals. To advice and discover the background of these institutions confirmed to come key festival’ representatives:Joost Daamen /NL/, Senior Programmer of IDFA, Lars Meyer /DE/, a selector from DOK Leipzig, Eva Rybková /CZ/ programmer at One World IHFF, Claas Danielsen /DE/, former Director of IFF DOK Leipzig, Martin Horyna /CZ/ a programmer from Karlovy Vary IFF or Marek Hovorka /CZ/, director of Jihlava IDFF. To discover the new opportunities of the VOD and online distribution comes Vincent Lucassen /NL/, the founder and CEO of Under the Milky Way.

    On Friday, 28th August, the morning will be dedicated to the open talks with the sales agents, who will go through the whole process of cooperation with producers, speak about the real potential and threats of the theatrical distribution, current situation on the European market and opportunities for author-driven documentaries there. The invitation have accepted Philippa Kowarsky /IL/ from Cinephil, twice nominated for Oscar (The Gatekeepers, The Act of Killing), Anaïs Clanet /FR/ from Wide House, dealing with such films as The Great Museum or Shadow World and Peter Jäger /AU/, the CEO of Autlook, the international distributor of More than Honey or Toto and His Sisters.
