NICOSIA: Countryside Animafest Cyprus Views of the World, one of the longest-running film festivals in Cyprus, has opened the call for film submissions for its 23rd edition, which will be held in August 2024.

LONDON: The Polish minority coproduction The Zone of Interest directed by Jonathan Glazer has been nominated in nine categories for the British Academy Film Awards 2024.

TRIESTE: Films by Janez Burger, Vladimir Perišić and Elene Naveriani are among the seven titles selected for the Feature Film Competition of the 35th edition of the Trieste Film Festival, which takes place 19 – 27 January 2024.

TALLINN: A 15 m EUR film studio complex is planned to start construction in Jõhvi, in eastern Estonia, in the summer of 2024. The studio is benefiting from funding from European Union's Just Transition Fund.

BERLIN: The European Film Academy has announced its board of 16 members running from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2025, which counts eight new members, including Daniel Hočevar (Slovenia), Mira Staleva (Bulgaria), Hanka Kastelicová (Czech Republic) and Marija Razgutė (Lithuania). Northeastern and Southeastern European regions are now represented by six Board members.

BUCHAREST: The Romanian box office witnessed an unprecedented year in 2023 with four domestic comedies in the Top Ten, of which Miami Bici 2 by Jesús del Cerro came ahead of Barbie and Oppenheimer with 2,542,016 admissions and 2.87 m EUR /14,317,977 RON gross. Three of these four domestic titles were produced by Matei Dima through Vidra Productions.

TRIESTE: The 14th edition of When East Meets West (WEMW, 21 – 24 January 2024) has announced the selection for Co-production Forum, Last Stop Trieste, This is IT, First Cut+ and EAVE Slate. WEMW takes place as usual within the Trieste Film Festival, whose 35th edition will be held 19 – 27 January 2024.

LOS ANGELES: Majority and minority coproductions from FNE partner countries have been shortlisted in several categories for the 96th edition of the Academy Awards. The Animated Short Film category boasts two Estonian and one Hungarian production, while two Polish productions are in the Documentary Feature category.
