FNE at KVIFF 2014: CEE Films Dominate Awards Corn Island, dir. George Ovashvili

KARLOVY VARY: Films from Central and Eastern Europe swept most of the top awards at the 49th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (4-12 July 2014) with the Georgian film Corn Island directed by George Ovashvili taking home the Crystal Globe the festival’s top prize.

Hungarian director Gyorgi Palfi picked up the Special Jury Prize as well as Best Director for his film Free Fall. Free Fall was also awarded the Europa Cinemas Label Award. Corrections Class by Russian director Ivan I Tverdovsky took the top prize in the East of the West Competition.

The international FIPRESCI critics award went to Rocks in My Pocket by Latvian director Signe Baumane. The winning film Corn Island was also the top rated film in the FNE FIPRESCI Critic ratings, a joint FNE FIPRESCI project that invites international critics attending the festival to rate the films in the main programmes with results published on FNE each day during the festival.

This year also saw the first edition of the FNE Coproduction Meetings at the festival which looks like it will become an annual fixture with all four of the film funds from the four Visegrad countries represented and four regional coproductions presented.

Over all more than 12 000 accredited visitors attended the festival including 478 filmmakers, 825 film professionals, and 640 journalists and over 130 000 tickets were sold for 478 screenings of 245 films.
