German Distributor Picks Up Polish Classics

By Katarzyna Grynienko

Polish public broadcaster TVP (www.tvp.pl) has signed an agreement with German Rundfunk Berlin-Brandenburg (www.rbb-online.de) to sell the DVD right to some of its most popular productions from the 1970's and 1980's. TVP said the agreement was the result of strong interest in its catalogue during this year's European Film Market in Berlin.

Included in the agreement are TVP productions Karino, Przygody psa cywila and Znak Orła. The agreement reflects a new trend in the Europan DVD market, which is rediscovering the most popular shows from the past and selling them in digitally improved sets. The German distributors present at the European Film Market were interested in TVP productions which were popular in the former East Germany.

"It is a great success for TVP. The shows will appear on the German market as part of an exclusive DVD series by the end of this year," said Maria Nadolna, the head of the national and internatinal sales at TVP. "We have been discussing the sales of DVD rights with a couple of partners for almost a year and a half. We wanted to choose the best offer and succeeded in doing just that. This is by far the best sales contract and one of the biggest TVP successes in the international market in the last couple of years," she added.
