PRODUCTION: Polish Tragedy Straight from the Sky in Production

By Katarzyna Grynienko

Polish independent filmmaker Piotr Matwiejczyk is working on Straight from the Sky (Prosto z nieba), a drama based on the events of 10 April 2010, when a Polish plane carrying the President, several government officials and notable members of the academic world crashed near the Russian city Smoleńsk, and the reaction of the Polish people.

"The whole thing speaks of what is most important in this tragedy, of what we forgot while looking for the guilty party, accusing one another. Straight from the Sky will be a film about ordinary people," the director said.

Matwiejczyk is one of the few Polish independent filmmakers well known by the broader audience. A screenwriter and director, he often acts as producer and editor of his pictures. In 2001 he co-founded Muflon Pictures (hwww.muflonpictures.com) production company, which produces his recent work. From 2001-2005 Matwiejczyk directed mainly comedies such as Chinacity (2001), I Know What You Did Last Winter ( 2002, Koszmar minonej zimy) and Emilia (2005). Later on he turned to dramas, with the focus on social themes such as Homo Father (2006), Beautiful (2006) and Shame (Wstyd, 2006). In 2009 he returned to parody and directed the dark comedy Peter, the 13th (Piotrek Trzynastego).

Straight from the Sky is produced by the director and Muflon Pictures, Piotr Żukowski of EXD'Art (www.exdart.com.pl), and Pawel and Ewa Sarbinowski of Alternatyva. The shoot for the drama started in early February in Warsaw and will last till the end of the month. The cast includes several respected Polish actors including Olga Bołądź, Marcin Bosak, Renata Dancewicz, Eryk Lubos, Aleksandra Bednarz, Agata Stawarz and Krzysztof Szekalski.
