Everybody in Our Family Wins Top Prizes at Gopo Awards

    BUCHAREST: Silviu Purcărete's debut, Somewhere in Palilula took seven prizes at Romania’s Gopo Awards, but Everybody in Our Family by Radu Jude swept up six of the main awards. 

    Everybody in Our Family won for Best Film, Best Director, Best Script (Radu Jude and Corina Sabău), Best Actor (Şerban Pavlu), Best Supporting Actor (Gabriel Spahiu), and Best Supporting Actress (Mihaela Sîrbu). Everybody in Our Family was produced by HiFilm Productions in coproduction with the Dutch company Circe Film and the Romanian company Abis Studio.

    Purcărete's Somewhere in Palilula/Undeva la Palilula produced by Libra Film received awards for cinematography, costumes, art direction, editing, original music, sound, and make-up and hair styling. Adrian Silişteanu, the DoP of Somewhere in Palilula also received the annual prize of Romanian Society of Cinematographers (RSC)

    Other prizes went to Adalbert's Dream by Gabriel Achim (produced by Green Film) which won Best Debut; Turn Off the Lights by Ivana Mladenovic (produced by Strada Film) for Best Documentary; and The Party/Chefu' by Adrian Sitaru (produced by 4Proof Film) for Best Short Film. Nicolae Constantin Tănase, the director of the short film Blu (produced by UNATC) received the Rising Star Award.

    Cristian Mungiu refused to compete with his film Beyond the Hills/După dealuri.

    The audience award for the local film with the best results in 2012 was split between Tudor Giurgiu's Of Snails and Men/Despre oameni şi melci (produced by Libra Film, attendance of 63,778) and Iura Luncaşu’s Sweet Little Lies/Minte-mă frumos (produced by MediaPro Pictures, 215,800 EUR/956,036 RON box office). 

    Actors Constantin Codrescu and Mitică Popescu received Lifetime Achievement awards, and actor Adrian Titieni was awarded for Outstanding Contribution by Pro Cinema TV channel, which was one of the gala's partners. Holy Motors by Leos Carax was voted Best European Film distributed in Romania in 2012 (by Independenţa Film). 

    The 7th edition of the Gopo Awards was held on 25 March and presented by Romanian Film Promotion with the support of the Romanian Ministry of Culture and Babel Communications
