CLUJ-NAPOCA: Free Dacians directed by Andrei Gorgan and Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan will have its national premiere in the Romanian Days competition of the 17th Transilvania IFF, running from 25 May to 3 June 2018. This long documentary questions the true identity of the Romanian people.
Free Dacians / Dacii liberi is a documentary aimed at giving to a big audience an alternative to the nationalist and populist events organised in Romania on the occasion of the centennial of the modern state.
„I don’t think that Romanians are obsessed with their origins, as they are obsessed with their present. Every member of a community validates himself through the qualities of his community. Since there are so few things known about the Dacians, it is more simple to say anything about them than not to say something”, Andrei Gorgan said in a statement.
The film is produced by Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan through Manifest Film in coproduction with Fundația Romania One, which also supported the project with a small amount of funding.
Shooting started at the historical reenactment festival Natale di Roma in Rome in 2010. It resumed after a break in Romania in 2016 and lasted until April 2018. There were approximately 30 shooting days, Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan told FNE.
There are two versions, one for the festivals and one for the TV. Negotiations with Romanian distributors for an autumn release are underway.
Monica Lăzurean-Gorgan started as a producer and she produced several short films and feature films by Adrian Sitaru through their company 4 Proof Film. After establishing her own company, Manifest Film, she produced and directed her first documentary, A Mere Breath / Doar o răsuflare, which received several awards including the Heart of Sarajevo at the 2016 Sarajevo FF.
Andrei Gorgan worked as a film editor on A Mere Breath and several fiction films such as Adrian Sitaru’s Domestic (4 Proof Film).
