CLUJ-NAPOCA: Daniel Sandu’s debut feature One Step Behind the Seraphim will be screened in the Romanian Days competition of the 17th Transilvania IFF, running from 25 May to 3 June 2018. The film won eight awards at the12th Gopo awards including best film, best director and best debut feature.
One Step Behind the Seraphim is an autobiographical film and follows a teenager enlisted in an Orthodox theological seminary, where he is facing an abusive system. Together with other boys he starts breaking all the rules, leading to a conflict with the seminary administration.
The main characters are played by newcomer Ștefan Iancu alongside Vlad Ivanov (4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days, Mobra films).
Ada Solomon produced the film through HiFilm Productions, with the support of the Romanian Film Centre, the MEDIA Programme – Creative Europe, Hollywood Multiplex Bucureşti Mall, Dr. Oetker, Vodafone România, MEDA, Praktiker România, Alphega Farmacie. The French company Indie Sales is handling the sales.
The project received a development grant and a production grant from the Romanian Film Centre and was nominated for the script contest organised by HBO Romania and Transilvania IFF. It was also selected for the CineLink Project Market Sarajevo and the Baltic Event Tallin. It also participated in the EKRAN international programme in Poland, the Producers Lab at Toronto IFF and the Talent Project Market of the Berlinale Talent Campus.
One Step Behind the Seraphim, which had 15 nods at the 2018 Gopo awards, is one of the few Romanian feature films released on the Vimeo platform, where it is available only for the Romanian audience.
The film was the fourth most popular domestic film in 2017 with 31,550 admissions and 81,587 EUR / 378,209 RON in box office (distributor Micro Film).
