BUCHAREST: The new teen film by Romanian writer/director Cristina Jacob Oh, Ramona! will be released domestically on 91 screens on 15 February 2019. Cristina Jacob’s box office hits #selfie and #selfie 69 topped the domestic charts in 2014 and 2016. This is the first English language film by Cristina Jacob with plans for theatrical distribution abroad.
Discussions are underway for theatrical distribution in the UK, France and other countries. Jacob Bros is the distributor for Romania, the UK and France.
The film produced by Zazu Film has had a big budget for a Romanian film, over 2.5 m EUR, which was partially covered by the Romanian Film Centre.
The international cast includes Bogdan Iancu, Aggy K. Adams, Holly Horne, Basil Eidenbenz, Leonardo Boudreau, Andromeda Godfrey and Melanie Ebanks.
The film is a coming-of-age story and an honest confession of sexual and moral ripening, focusing on a shy boy, who becomes a modern Casanova driven by the indifference of the girl he loves. Oh, Ramona! is adapted from the novel Suge-o, Ramona! / Suck It, Ramona! by Andrei Ciobanu, that has had more than one million readers online. Ciobanu and Andrei Coteț also wrote the script.
"I’d rather not set myself any expectations. I just want this film to reach as many people as possible, to get seen. It’s a good, entertaining film, so we’re hopeful people will come see this love story, in the Month of Love", Cristina Jacob told FNE.
#selfie 69 was produced by Adrian Sârbu, the ex-CEO of Central European Media Enterprises, through Zazu Film. It was released by Zazu Film in September 2016 with 150,536 admissions (according to Cinemagia) through December 2016. The film is a sequel to Iacob’s #selfie (Zazu Film), which was the domestic box office hit of 2014 with 87,288 admissions.
