BUCHAREST: Cristina Jacob’s teen film Oh, Ramona! was released on Netflix on 1 June 2019. The film is the first Romanian production with more than 1 m USD box office in domestic cinemas within three weeks of its release. Since its domestic release on 15 February 2019 the film has moved into third place, with 260,531 admissions.
Oh, Ramona! is available on Netflix in 190 countries and it was translated into 33 languages. Netflix has 1.7 m users in Romania .
The film is the first English language film by Cristina Jacob and it was produced by Zazu Film Production with a big budget for a Romanian film, over 2.5 m EUR, which was partially covered by the Romanian Film Centre.
The international cast includes Bogdan Iancu, Aggy K. Adams, Holly Horne, Basil Eidenbenz, Leonardo Boudreau, Andromeda Godfrey and Melanie Ebanks.
The film is a coming-of-age story focusing on a shy boy, who becomes a modern Casanova driven by the indifference of the girl he loves. Oh, Ramona! is adapted from the novel Suck It, Ramona! / Suge-o, Ramona! by Andrei Ciobanu, which has had more than one million readers online. Ciobanu and Andrei Coteț also wrote the script.
