The first feature of Romanian director Florin Şerban, If I Want to Whistle, I Whistle, will wrap postproduction in Sweden in December.
Romanian co-producer from Strada Film (www.stradafilm.ro), Daniel Mitulescu, told FNE that contracts with two Swedish coproducers were signed recently.
They are Film I Väst (www.filmivast.se) and The Chimney Pot (www.thechimneypot.com). The film is also supported by the Romanian National Centre for Cinema (www.cncinema.abt.ro), the Swedish Film Institute (www.sfi.se) and Post Republic Berlin (www.post-republic.com), and has been pre-sold to the Romanian Television (www.tvr.ro).
The script, written by Cătălin Mitulescu and Florin Şerban is based on a play written by Andreea Vălean which won The Magic Box Service Award at CineLink, during the 2008 Sarajevo IFF (www.sff.ba). The project also won the CineLink Work in Progress Award at Sarajevo IFF in August 2009.
The story evolves around a teenager prisoner who falls for a Psychology student, kidnaps her and tries to escape 5 days before his release. The shooting took place this year in a village on the Danube river. The cast includes mainly nonprofessional actors, including real teenage prisoners chosen after a six months casting process.
Daniel Mitulescu told FNE that the film will be finished in time for the pre-selection for the Berlinale. The local premiere is set for 2010.
