The Awards of the Finnish Film Industry Professionals

The awards of the film industry professionals were presented on 28th September in Helsinki in the closing gala of The Finnish Film Week, which was held for the third time this year. The event is organized by The Central Organization of Finnish Film Producers (SEK), The Association of Finnish Film Directors (SELO), The Union of Finnish Actors, The Union of Finnish Film and Video Employees (SET), The Finnish Screenwriters´ Guild and The Finnish Documentary Guild in co-operation with the Helsinki International Film Festival.

From the beginning The Finnish Film Week has had a closing gala where the awards of different organizations are presented. The recipients are chosen by the members of their respective organizations and guilds. The awards presented this year were: The Producer of the Year, The Screenwriter of the Year, The Co-worker of the Year, The Documentary of the Year and The Actor of the Year.

The Producer of the Year was awarded to the Iron Sky producer Tero Kaukomaa. Award was based on the following motivation: "Iron Sky is a film produced with an extremely bold and innovative approach. The producing of Iron Sky has shown – in addition to the creative madness and vision - great ability and understanding in the use of contemporary methods of financing and building of the fan base. All the other aspects of the film actually pale in comparison to the fact that it has been able to get funded, shot and distributed, ie produced, successfully. "

The Co-worker of the Year award from The Union of Finnish Film and Video Employees (SET) went to Tomi Lakonen, who has lately worked on Once Upon a Time in the North and Risto. "The Co-Worker of the Year is a fair person and respects other people and their work. He will do his own work well and when needed supports others in theirs. Working as a gaffer or a grip Lakonen is able to influence positively the mood on the set and is also unerringly professional in his work. In addition, Lakonen cares about the well-being of the rest of the crew” was the motivation given by his colleagues.

The Association of Finnish Film Directors (SELO) chose to award Sakari Kirjavainen, the director of Silence. They gave the following motivation: "Sakari Kirjavainen is a versatile artist. He has written novels, directed TV series, radio plays, short films as well as, in his own words, two and a half feature films. The half one was the film Tali-Ihantala 1944, co-directed with Åke Lindman, an experience that left Kirjavainen with a desire to tell one more story of the war time. Silence is a timeless film of not only of the insanity of the war but also of the relationships in the constant shadow of death. The director has guided his cast very well and all in all the style of the film is able to successfully convey the feeling of living somewhere in between. Kirjavainen wanted to show the war as a time and place, where no one wants to return to and from where no one returns the same – and he has succeeded in this. The result is the crowning achievement of the fine year of the Finnish film."

The Finnish Documentary Guild awarded its prize to YLE producer Sari Volanen with the following motivation "Sari Volanen has the courage and the sense for the documentary. Sari has defended her stronghold for alternative documentary film with guts and perseverance. She has both supported the young and upcoming filmmakers who have approached her and defended the idea that the documentary film does not have to be tied to a specific form or be restricted as a playground for the chosen few filmmakers.”

The Finnish Screenwriters´ Guild chose The Storage screenwriter Veli-Pekka Hänninen as a Screenwriter of the Year.

The Union of Finnish Actors awarded Joonas Saartamo for his touching performance in Silence. The colleagues who voted for him repeatedly used in their motivations the following words: convincing, believable and moving. Joonas Saartamo´s acting was breathtaking and he was the soul of the film.

The Awards are made possible through the generous support of Veikkaus Oy.
