KARLOVY VARY: Famous Czech musician and actor Ondřej Havelka introduced his long-awaited project Hastrman during the 52nd Karlovy Vary IFF (30 June – 8 July 2017). Described as a blend of drama, romance and fantasy, the project has finalised the first of the four stages of principal photography.

The screenplay is an adaptation of a novel under the same title by the renowned Czech writer Miloš Urban, published in 2001. Spanning centuries, myths and legends, it tells the tale of a strange, wild nobleman, who returns after years abroad to a small Czech village to claim his family property. He turns out to be Hastrman, the water demon from old Bohemian legends. In this romantic, fantastic yet ironic story, love brings an agonising dilemma: whether to remain a creature of the wild or to dare to cross the borders of intimacy with a human.

Hastrman is produced by Prvni veřejnoprávni in coproduction with the Czech Television and Barrandov Studio. The State Cinematography Fund is supporting. The budget is 1.7 m EUR / 45 m CZK.

As the producer Čestmír Kopecký told FNE, shooting started at the Castle Jezeří in March 2017 and will continue in Central and North Bohemia from 30 July to 14 September 2017.

CinemArt plans to release the film domestically in April 2018.
