PRODUCTION: Robert Sedláček Starts Shooting on Jan Palach

    PRAGUE: Award winning film and TV director Robert Sedláček starts shooting a feature film dedicated to Jan Palach, who committed self-immolation after the invasion of Czechoslovakia by the Warsaw Pact armies in 1968. The Czech/Slovak coproduction Jan Palach will be released on 21 August 2018, the day of the 50th anniversary of the Soviet occupation of Czechoslovakia.

    Writer Eva Kantůrková, one of the members of the Czech dissident movement, penned the script. The film focuses on the last months of Palach´s life and on his inner transformation before the protest act. Viktor Zavadil plays Palach, while Zuzana Bydžovská is his mother. The cast includes Denisa Barešová, Jan Vondráček, Michal Balcar and Karel Jirák.

    Viktor Schwarc is producing through Cineart TV Prague in coproduction with the Czech Television, the Slovak company Arina Film Production, RTVS and Up&Up Production. The budget is 1.74 m EUR / 45.4 m CZK.

    There will be ten days of preliminary shooting starting 17 August, which will be followed by 25 days of principal photography in November and December 2017. The Czech locations include Prague, Milovice and Pardubice, but the film will also be shot in Austria.
