PRAGUE: German sales agent Beta Cinema has picked up Mahnaz Mohammadi’s debut feature Son Mother / Pesar-Madar. This Iranian/Czech coproduction will have its world premiere in the Discovery section of the Toronto International Film Festival (5-15 September 2019).
The Iranian filmmaker and women’s rights activist has made a name for herself with documentaries on social issues such as Women Without Shadows and the award-winning Travelogue. Based on a screenplay by renowned filmmaker Mohammad Rasoulof, Son – Mother is no less provocative or socially critical than Mohammadi’s previous documentary work.
The main characters are played by Raha Khodayari and Mahan Nasiri.
The film is produced by Kaveh Famam through the Czech company Europe Media Nest, Mohammad Rasoulof and Farzad Pak through Filminiran.
Europe Media Nest has been trying to “build a bridge between Czech and Iranian cinema in the long term,” says Kaveh Farnam who also helped connect the film crew with Magiclab, the leading Prague-based postproduction studio which took care of the color grading and VFX. The sound was mastered in the Bystrouška studio in Prague as well.
