The story follows Rudo, a naive music teacher obsessed with the idea of composing a symphony about the river Drina. While passing through his hometown of Zvornik to visit his mother’s grave in 1992 he fails to notice that the war has started.
“I was born in this region, I know these people and moreover I found some personal things in the main character,” Šišić, who now lives in the Netherlands, told FNE.
The director belives making a film version of “Bloody Drina” is highly topical today. “Wars are like tsunamis, killing many innocent people,” he says.
The main character is trapped in a hotel throughout the film, but remains as innocent at the end of the film as he was at the start. In his de facto imprisonment he finds inspiration for his symphony.
Hotel Drina is a Bosnia-Netherlands-Croatia co-production between Anila Gajevic for Zona (www.zonatalents.ba), Šahin Šišić for K.F. Art Family (www.kf-artfamily.com), and Filip Sovagovic for Zona Sova (www.zonasova.hr). Negotiations with a Turkish co-producer are underway.
The budget is 4 m EUR, Gajevic told FNE, adding that the producers will apply for the next round of the grant contest organized by the Foundation of Cinematography of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (www.bhfilm.ba) and local grants.
The project was first pitched at the Golden Carpathian Market & Film Festival (www.goldencarpathian.com), in Bucharest.
Shooting is set for 2014 and the film is expected to be finished in 2015.
