PRODUCTION: Alexandru Solomon Developing Tarzan's Testicles

By

JIHLAVA: Romanian director/producer Alexandru Solomon is working on Tarzan's Testicles, a feature documentary on the Abkhazian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy, established in 1927, a renowned primatology center during the Communist era where scientists tried to crossbreed humans and monkeys to demonstrate the triumph of the Revolution over religion.

Solomon aims to investigate the relationship between humans and monkeys many years after the Revolution, in a "hypothetical country" (as Abkhazia is today) where "there is no question of animal rights since human rights don't exist," he said at the Distribution Forum of the Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival (www.dokument-festival.cz).

Solomon told FNE that he had planned to do a different story, but he found many similarities between the current Abkhazia and the Romania of 15 years ago. He made three trips to Abkhazia and plans to start a 45 day shoot there in the summer of 2013 and continuing into winter.

Solomon is producing through the Romanian company HiFilm Production (www.hifilm.ro) with a budget of 480,000 EUR. The project received letters of intent from HBO Romania (www.hbo.ro) and the sales agent Films Boutique (www.filmsboutique.com). It received a MEDIA development grant (http://ec.europa.eu).

Solomon plans to release the film theatrically at least in Romania and also on TV. The film will have 80 minute and 52 minute versions. The premiere is set for 2014.
