Dominga Sotomayor and Katarzyna Klimkiewicz launch a crowdfunding campaign for their short film!

Acclaimed young, female directors, Dominga Sotomayor and Katarzyna Klimkiewicz launched an Indiegogo campaign to finance their mutual project – a short film called The Time Before. They hope to raise 10.000 EUR of the missing funding until 1st March 2013. The 2012 Rotterdam Tiger Award-winner (Sotomayor) and the 2010 European Film Award Winner for Best Short Film (Klimkiewicz) co-wrote and will co-direct the film.

The film combines two strong inspirations: a poem by Polish poet Wisława Szymborska called Road Accident, and Dominga’s personal childhood experiences while living on the island Chiloé. This resulted in an ensemble story of a family waiting for a missing member that was supposed to join them for a celebration. It’s a slow-burning mood piece told through a series of visual impressions, with a finely executed undertone of insecurity and untold tension.

Dominga Sotomayor, explains: I want to explore the complexity of the family and group relationships. I'm interested in daily situations, familiar, but always seen at a distance; a certain idea of style and form that’s uncomfortable, and from where I stand, a reflection on mise-en-scène. For me, this is related with how what's familiar can become strange at the same time.

Katarzyna Klimkiewicz adds: When something horrible happens in our lives, we always ask “why?” But we never ask the same question, when good things appear in our lives, when we encounter beauty and peace. Is it because it is not a perfect peace? I want to make a film that is about this imperfect beauty of a moment.

The Time Before is a Polish/Chilean co-production, initiated by the CPH DOX’s 2012 DOX: LAB programme, which brought together the two female directors. They were joined by an international production team: Rebeca Gutiérrez (Cinestacion Ltda., Chile) and Jan Naszewski (New Europe Film Sales, Poland).

The shooting will take place in March on the Chiloé Island in Chile, using existing buildings and local nature (beaches, forests, etc.) as locations. A small crew will film non-professional actors over a period of 10 days. The project will be pitched at the BAFICI FF’s Buenos Aires Lab in March 2013 and it will premiere at the CPH:DOX film festival in October 2013.
