Masaryk Sets March 2017 Release

By

BRATISLAVA: The Czech/Slovak coproduction Masaryk, directed by Július Ševčík, is in postproduction in preparation for a March 2017 premiere. The film, which explores a personally difficult stage in the life of Czech diplomat and politician Jan Masaryk, takes a close look at the Munich Agreement (which annexed portions of Czechoslovakia to Nazi Germany) and the period preceding WWII.

Masaryk, who was the Ambassador in London, disappeared from public life and broke off contact with political colleagues and friends. Trampled down by the weight of long-term obligations and the expectations of others, he sought escape in alcohol, drugs and self-torment.

The film is produced by Rudolf Biermann's film production company in Slovakia and Infilm. The crew includes notable talents including Martin Štrba as DoP and Milan Býček as the production designer. The cast contains a number of Czech stars, including Karel Roden in the lead role of Masaryk. Oldřich Kaiser portrays Czechoslovak President Beneš and Czech model Eva Herzigová plays one of Masaryk’s lovers. The film also features a number of European actors. The psychiatrist Stein is played by German actor Hanns Zischler; prime minister Neville Chamberlain is played by British actor Paul Nicholas; British foreign secretary Lord Halifax is portrayed by Dermot Crowley (Babel, Raw); and French foreign minister Bonnet is played by Milton Welsh (Grand Hotel Budapest, The Ghost Writer).

The shooting started a year ago in Bratislava and moved on to the Czech Republic, the Netherlands and London. The film with the budget of 2 m EUR is coproduced by Slovak public broadcaster RTVS, Czech Television, ZDF and Arte. The Czech State Cinematography Fund supported the production of the film. It received a production grant of 220,000 EUR from the Slovak Audiovisual Fund.

Masaryk will be released in Czech cinemas on 9 March 2017 by Bioscop. The film will be distributed in Slovakia by Garfield Film.
