BRATISLAVA: Peter Bebjak is preparing to shoot his fifth feature film, the comedy / drama Emil at end of 2017. Bebjak was recently awarded best director at Karlovy Vary IFF for the Slovak / Ukrainian drama The Line.
Emil tells the story of an employee of a crematory, a middle-aged bachelor living with his mother and secretly in love with a female colleague. Emil is a grumpy man caught in between his work and his lonely life embittered by his failed career as an actor. A sudden change comes with the diagnosis of cancer and his daily routine and selfish motivations are confronted with something bigger than life - the death.
„We decided to write a comedy, although the main topic could seem quite sad. Of course, it is sad, but our own family experience, as well as a brief visit to the crematory during the shooting of The Cleaner proved that the proximity of death is not necessarily something to be scared of. Our protagonist is about to find out that there is always some time left to enjoy life, even in this kind of circumstances“, scriptwriter Peter Gašparík told FNE.
This is the first script co-written by Peter Gašparík together with Peter Bebjak after horror Evil (D.N.A. Production) and drama The Cleaner.
Slovakia’s D.N.A. Production is producing with an estimated budget of 696,000 EUR. A Czech coproducer may be on board soon.
The crew will include Bebjak’s close collaborators such as DoP Martin Žiaran and editor Marek Kráľovský. Renowned Slovak actors Emília Vášáryová and Ľuboš Kostelný are already confirmed.
Peter Bebjak was awarded best director at IFF Karlovy Vary for his Slovak / Ukrainian drama The Line, produced by Wandal Production in coproduction with Garnet International Media Group, RTVS, HomeMedia Production and Martin Kohút.
