Film Funding Proposed in Bulgaria

By FNE Staff

SOFIA: The Bulgarian government has proposed 16.6 million leva for film funding in 2012, according to a statement by the Minister of Culture Vezhdi Rashidov on 3 June 2011.

According to the Sofia Echo, Rashidov singled out the recent international and domestic success story of Bulgarian films. The amount is part of a significant increase since 2008, when just 5.7 million leva was allotted for film production. Since then Bulgaria film production has noted the box office hits Mission London and Tilt, along with a wave of critically acclaimed productions including Dzift and Eastern Plays. Both local and international film professionals had pushed for a continuation of funding for film production as a way to ensure the continuation of its revival.
