PRAGUE: One of the biggest film openings in Central Europe takes place this week in the Czech and Slovak Republic. The object of all the attention is Saxana: The Little Witch on a Broomstick, a Czech fairytale directed by venerated Czech master of the genre, Vaclav Vorlicek which opens 15 September 2011 in Prague.

The film will open on 110 screens in the Czech Republic - a record for the Czech Republic - and 30 screens in Slovakia this week. It is being distributed by Film Europe (www.filmeurope.eu).

The $3.5 million Czech-German coproduction is produced by Pragofilm (www.pragofilm.cz) and coproduced by Ceská Televize (www.ceskatelevize.cz), Rat Pack (Germany) and Ivan Hronec. The film is a generation bridge effort, a follow-up to the 1972 hit film The Girl on a Broomstick. The original Saxana, a young pupil from the School of Magic, escaped from fairyland, fell in love with a mortal and lived happily ever after, keeping her past a secret from everyone.. until, many years later, her daughter Saxanka discovers the magic book and revisits her mom's homeland filled with strange creatures and magic. The new version employs state of the art animation technology.

Hronec who heads Film Europe said: “This is a new beginning for Film Europe as a producer and as a distributor and a broadcaster. We are working as a minority coproducer and we will distribute the films and also show them on Film Europe TV channels.” Film New Europe also picked up rights for Venice winner Alexander Sokurov's Faust for the Czech and Slovak Republics.
