Flower Buds was produced by Viktor Schwarcz (Cineart TV Prague) and coproduced by Jaroslav Kucera and Jordi Niubo. The film was funded by the Czech State Fund for Film, and Jirasky received a 2008 prize for the script.
The 94-minute drama, filmed in Czech and Vietnamese, is set in a small Czech town during the Christmas holidays, but paints a disillusioned picture of a family and acquaintances against a background that encompasses gambling, trains, strip joints, and debt.
The film was nominated for 10 awards and won the Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Vladimir Javorsky) and Best Cinematography (Vladimir Smutny) at the Czech Lions.
Flower Buds reached 11th place at the Czech box office on its opening weekend (15 December 2011), with 1,540 admissions, distributed by Bontonfilm (www.bontonfilm.cz).
