The news, which had not been confirmed by Barrandov TV, claims that Zelezny will be named to the post on 1 November 2013. Zelezny has said that he wants to move the struggling channel into a successful position on the market by doubling its 5% market share.
Zelezny has been at turns an admired and controversial figure in the Czech media. In 1994 he led TV Nova to the most successful launch in the history of television before maneuvering the station away from owner Central European Media Enterprises, which led to an international court case that cost the Czech Republic some 10 billion CZK. Zelezny then was elected to the European Parliament, which temporarily provided him immunity from prosecution until it was waived by parliament. He was later found guilty of tax evasion related to imported paintings and received a suspended sentence.
