Czech Filmmakers Launch Czech Public Television Support Appeal

By

PRAGUE: More than 10,000 people have signed the appeal initiated by leading Czech filmmakers in support of the Czech Television. The appeal is a reaction to President Miloš Zeman's inauguration speech on 8 March 2018, when he attacked the public broadcaster and other journalists.

The appeal was first read by the Academy Award winner Jan Svěrák at the 25th Czech Film and Television Academy Awards on 10 March 2018.

Sverak told FNE "In reaction to our President’s inaugural speech in which he proposed to limit the freedom of independent media, we made a proclamation in support of Czech TV which was the main target of the speech. It’s not in President’s power to tame the public service media which is one of the pillars of our democracy so he proposed our parliament to do the job. Our proclamation was signed by 10.000 people in two weeks and was sent to all members of the Czech parliament."

The Czech filmmakers are requesting politicians and public personalities to fight for the independence of the strongest public media outlet.
