A Malta court has ordered the owner of the Mediterranean Film Studios to return the property to the government of Malta due to nonpayment of rent.

According to reports in the Times of Malta, the studio, which has hosted numerous of high profile international productions in recent years, will continue operating.

The owners of the studio had signed a 65 year rental contract in 1995. The court ordered that the land be turned over to the government within 40 days of the late June ruling, as well as a financial payment. The government said no rent had been paid for a period of 12 years. German businessman and yacht enthusiast Jost Merten acquired a majority stake in the studio in 1999.
