The change was initiated by the new President of TVP,
Juliusz Braun, who found that the previous regulations were impractical and restrictive for the Board. The previous statute, which
was in force through 30 March 2011, gave the Ministry of the Treasury
and the Assembly of Shareholders control over selling and buying
rights for programmes as well as obtaining and granting licences of a value
surpassing 50,000 EUR. The decisions also required approval by the Supervising Council of TVP.
The new statute states that these decisions will be made by the
Board of TVP, making the station more independent from the government's
influence and facilitating the production of television content.
The Polish Minister of the Treasury, Aleksander Grad, approved these
changes on 8 June 2011 and the new statute is now awaiting
registration at he National Court Register. The change has been well received
by the Polish film community as a part of the continuing improvement of Polish public media.
