Slovak internet TV channel launched

By Jana Kadlecova
News web server www.sme.sk launched an internet television channel, tv.sme.sk, on June 11.

Tv.sme.sk began preparations in spring 2007. "Since then the volume of our video productions has risen so that now we produce enough formats for our own television and enough experience to prepare a regular weekly program," Tomas Bella, the editor in chief of sme.sk, told FNE.

He added that tv.sme.sk was an expensive and risky experiment, but SME, Slovakia's leading newspaper, considers it an obligation. Sme.sk's video content drew over one million viewers in May.

"The investment is in hundreds of thousands of Euro. Economic return is problematic, since it the first newspaper video project ... (but) there is no necessity to be financially self-sufficient in its first year," Bella said.

Most of the formats are in-house production, but several short documentaries were bought from the BBC.

Sme.sk belongs to Petit Press Publisher House that is 50% owned by the Media Group Rheinische Post.
