Since the early 2000s, Romania has been a major attraction for the international film industry. Blessed with diverse landscapes and more advantageous rates than most of other Central and Eastern European countries, Romania has been on the radar for Hollywood blockbusters, TV series, art-house films and commercials. Cold Mountain (2003) was one of the first Oscar-nominated Hollywood productions set overseas, shot almost entirely in Romania’s Carpathian Mountains. Almost a decade later, two TV series under the History Channel umbrella, Hatfield &McCoys (2012) and the recently released Sons of Liberty (2015), prove Romania’s versatility regarding locations for various productions needs, from fields near the capital, to forests in Transylvania, untouched territories where reenactments and large crews can explore different historical moments on film. Nevertheless, Romania has also been the set of action thrillers such as Ghost Rider 2 (2011), partly filmed on the famous Transfagarasan mountain road, or The Zero Theorem, the latest film by Terry Gilliam (2013), entirely shot in Bucharest for 36 days and partly post-produced here. The capital was also the main shooting site for the action film The Dying of the Light (2014), released this March, starring Nicholas Cage, and for The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman (2013), a romantic thriller with Shia LaBoeuf and Evan Rachel Wood among others.
Not only foreign productions benefitted from the local resources. The Romanian ‘new wave’ of directors had a significant development in world cinema over the last decade acknowledging the quality of filmmakers and facilities available. Acclaimed productions include Cristian Mungiu’s 4 Weeks, 3 Months and 2 Days that won the Palme D’Or award at Cannes in 2007, Calin Peter Netzer for his film, Child’s Pose, awarded with the Golden Bear in Berlinale 2013 and, this year, Radu Jude won the Silver Bear with his film, Aferim!
Despite the growing interest in Romania as an excellent filming alternative, the industry so far lacked a unique project, an all-encompassing package with information regarding locations, film crews, equipment available and rates. Location Guide Romania offers a fresh perspective, an intuitive and integrated package of services that will become the key-stop point for any producer thinking about filming in Romania. The project will connect professionals covering all aspects of production, offering tailor made solutions for every film or commercial project, making sure each benefits the most out of what Romania has to offer.
Although in its early stages, the project was already welcomed and embraced by the national industry and international professionals and film commissions. Location Guide Romania endeavors to achieve these goals firstly by the newly established online platform, constantly updated with new opportunities in the field that will extend with a complete database of producers, services, information about the country’s profile and rates available for foreign producers. Secondly, our team of professionals will participate at some of the most important international events dedicated to location scouting or the film industry, offering face-to-face consultations or news about opportunities in the field. Location Guide Romania is the only Romanian promoter among organizations and film commissions from all over Europe, America or Asia that will be present at AFCI Locations Show in LA, US between 5th and 7th of March.
