Martin Scorsese tells the story of the brilliant and unconventional British filmmaking duo, Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger (Imre Pressburger, born and raised in Hungary), and their body of work. Scorsese first saw the films of Powell and Pressburger on American television as a child and they captured his imagination for a lifetime. In his precise and sensitive analysis, he talks not only about his idols and his personal connection to them, but also reveals how their films influenced him and his entire generation. Rich in archive material, Made in England is one of the most beautiful film history documentaries of the past few years, and is itself film history. Scorsese explores in full the collaboration between the Englishman Powell and the Hungarian Pressburger - two romantics and idealists, who thrived in the face of adversity during World War II but were eventually brought low by the film industry of the 1950s. Scorsese celebrates their ability to create “subversive commercial movies” and describes how deeply their films have influenced his own work.
The film premiered in Hungary at CineFest – Miskolc International Film Festival on 6th September, was screened at Budapest Classics Film Marathon festival, and will be distributed in the countries’ film theaters very soon. The NFI Film Archive oversees the regional distribution and is seeking committed distribution partners.
