Europa Cinemas presents Karlovy Vary award

    Europa Cinemas, present at the Karlovy Vary film festival for the third year, has awarded its Europa Cinemas Label as Best European film to the Danish film Applause by Martin Pieter Zandvliet.

    The jury included Rita Linda Potyondi (Hungary), exhibitor of Cirko-Gejzír (Budapest), and Mira Staleva (Bulgaria), exhibitor of Cinema House (Sofia), along with Neil Connolly (Ireland), exhibitor of The Light House Cinema (Dublin) and Ivan Barredo (Spain), and Public events manager of Cines Verdi (Madrid, Barcel.

    In a statement, the jury called the film, " A powerful and moving drama with brilliant cinematic language and sustained performance by Paprika Steen, fulfilling every scene."

    The film was selected from the films screened in the main competition and the East of the West competition.

    The winning film will receive the support of the Europa Cinemas exhibitors who commit themselves to extend the length of its run on screen and to reinforce the promotion campaign directed at the general audience and the media. World sales are handled by TrustNorcisk (www.trustnordisk.com).

    Europa Cinemas / MEDIA network (www.europa-cinemas.org) comprises 1945 screens and 758 cinemas in 439 cities of 43 countries. It has also named Europa Cinema Label awards in Berlin and Cannes for 2009.
