FNE at Varna Golden Rose FF National Competition: Love.net

By Pavlina Jeleva

Ilian Djevelekov's feature debut Love.net is a Miramar Film (www.miramarfilm.com) production made in collaboration with Zoom Media (bgarstudion.com). Djevelekov is one of the three co-owners of Miramar Film (Zift) and Bulgaria's 2009 Cannes Producer on the Move. Love.net was shot in 2009 and 2010 on location in Bulgaria and the UK.

{mosimage}Treating the subject of "virtual love," the script was written by Neli Dimitrova, Matey Konstantinov and Djevelekov himself. It was based on a careful selection made from over 7,000 personal stories, shared by active IT users. The final version of the script brought together a surgeon and his wife; a Sofia university professor and a Scottish engineer; an editor of a popular men's magazine, his brother and a prostitute; and a divorced businesswoman and her 13 year old daughter. According to Djevelekov: "The multifaceted 'clashes' of characters that fall in and out of love reveal a unique opportunity of modern times - to meet someone, to communicate and to finally link your life with someone you have never actually met. But the film is also a subtle reminder that love continues to be as mystic and fleeting as it used to be in the times of the cavemen."

{mosimage}Due to the popularity of rock musician John Lawton and to beloved national stars like Hristo Shopov (The Passion of the Christ), Zahari Banarov (Zift), and Koina Rousseva, Love.net became Bulgaria's second most successful film of the year following Dimitar Mitovsky's hit Mission London (www.mission-london.com). With the help of an advertising campaign underlining the eccentricity of "internet love" and a large release of 33 prints distributor Alexandra Films attracted a large audience. Love.net is ranked in the top ten of the most successful films distributed in Bulgaria during the last 20 years.
