FNE at Varna Golden Rose FF National Competition: Holy Light

By Pavlina Jeleva

Holy Light is the film debut of Bulgarian writer Georgi Tenev. Based on several short stories from a book of the same name. It is an independent production made in collaboration with film equipment and production companies among which are Little Big Films (www.littlebigfilms.eu), Agitprop (www.agitprop.bg) and the Altera publishing house (www.altera-bg.com).

{mosimage}The film tells the story of a sick and cruel boss of a fictional Secret Service taking pleasure in arresting and torturing young members of the so called Free Youth Union. Defined as "electric" the plot also includes the self destruction of the main protagonist after understanding that his next victim intends to refuse to surrender.

A graduate from the experimental class of theatre directors Margarita Mladenova and Ivan Dobchev at NATFA (www.natfiz.bg) in 1994, Tenev is known for his theatre plays and close collaboration with the experimental laboratory Sfumato (www.sfumato.info) in which Mladenova and Dobchev are key participants. He also worked with film director Javor Gardev and art designer Nikola Toromanov on a short term artistic project, Triumviratus. Tenev is also a popular face from numerous programs broadcast by the Bulgarian National Television (www.bnt.bg), especially the Bulgarian version of The Big Read which he co-founded and moderated.

Due to special style requirements the film was shot by three directors of photography, one of them an underwater photography specialist. The music is written by the composer Kalin Nikolov, composer of Zift and close collaborator of Javor Gardev.

The cast includes the famous Bulgarian actor Boris Loukanov who is credited with over 50 features, most of them part of Bulgaria's film heritage.
