There are 32 premieres in the Official Selection, which comprises the Crystal Globe Competition, the East of the West Competition and the Special Screenings section. For the first time, documentaries will be incorporated in the two competition programmes.
The festival will celebrate the work of The Film Foundation, established by Martin Scorsese in 1990, via an extensive tribute.
The sidebar programmes will be announced two weeks prior to the festival.
Also on 29 June 2021, KVIFF Eastern Promises Industry Days unveiled the 29 selected film projects, which will be showcased in Works in Progress, Works in Development - Feature Launch, and First Cut+ Works. The event will take place entirely online 28 July-12 August 2021.
Projects from Hungary, Poland, Romania and Georgia were selected for Works in Progress, while Works in Development - Feature Launch (a collaboration between KVIFF, the MIDPOINT Institute, When East Meets West coproduction market, and the Trieste Film Festival) selected nine majority or minority coproductions involving Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Montenegro, the Czech Republic, Croatia and Estonia.
First Cut+ will showcase eight projects, including projects from Slovenia, Slovakia, Latvia, Poland, Serbia and Croatia.
The 55th Karlovy Vary IFF is organised by Film Servis Festival Karlovy Vary, a.s. and its main supporter is the Ministry of Culture Czech Republic.
